Fuel Poverty

What is Fuel Poverty?

A household is in fuel poverty if they cannot afford to adequately heat their home.

Fuel Poverty causes misery, ill health and premature deaths in millions of households across the UK. Someone in fuel poverty will be cold, ill and making difficult decisions whether to heat or eat.

At Ramsey Foodbank we are concerned about the cost of living crisis and will offer support and advice on places to get help.

We have collated a list of websites which we hope you can get help if you are experiencing fuel poverty. Please read on to access some of the help we have found:

1. Community Action on Fuel Poverty https://fuelpovertyresource.org.uk/fuel-poverty/ have created some resources which may offer useful advice if you are trying to heat your home this winter. They also have links to the Energy Saving Trust on their website which direct you to the Citizens Advice Bureau page  where you can see the support on offer.

3. Better Housing Better Health

https://www.bhbh.org.uk/

Better Housing Better Health is there to help keep residents warm and well at home and improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

In a preventative approach to health and wellbeing, their service provides residents with a single point of contact to get impartial expert advice to help improve the energy efficiency of their home, save money and improve comfort.

4. Charis

Charis was launched in 2003 with a simple purpose to support those in hardship with a utility debt.

They prioritise the creation of pathways to sustainability for those who are given support by providing people with help, rather than just a hand-out, and  work hard to improve the lives of people by applying compassion, creativity and care to the safe delivery of financial support, products and services.

Charis was instrumental in helping to design and support the launch of Ofgem’s Warm Home Discount scheme for all the major energy suppliers.  Since then, they have continued to diversify and expand, working with charities, housing associations, citizen’s advice, and local authorities.

They deliver the support through the Charis Shop Platform, which gives 24/7 client access to many products and services, offering immediate support to those who need it most. The link below will take you to the page on their website where you can see which support is currently available through their partners.

We have been able to set up our own shop where there are a range of products, such as food and fuel vouchers, white goods and furniture! The link below provides access to this page.

Supporter donations will help us to be able to include this provision within our services. So please, if you are able, do click on the link to Local Giving (in the top right hand corner of the page) where you can donate directly to Ramsey Foodbank and remember to add Gift Aid.

4. Acts 435 https://www.acts435.org.uk is an online giving charity, directly connecting those who want to give with those who are in genuine need of their help, through a network of local churches and charities. It’s about giving to people directly, to help them bridge the gap when they are facing a financial crisis.

Ramsey Foodbank have two advocates who can work with you to set up your application. Once created it will be posted on the Acts website to be read by their supporters, who then donate whatever amount they can to raise money for your crisis.
